The primary difference is that in virtual classes you are required to attend synchronous (live) meetings on specified dates and times while fully online classes may not have any synchronous (live) meetings or may have them on a flexible student-determined schedule. Neither one will require you to attend class on a campus. Both types of classes will have due dates and deadlines for submitting work.
If you already registered, you can find this information in the "My Schedule" widget (box) MyPima. Check the "method" to see if it is virtual or online. Virtual classes will have specific days and times listed. If you have not registered yet, you can find the "method" when reviewing class information in the schedule of classes.
Your online class begins on the first day listed on the schedule of classes. For example, if the class begins on August 19th, you will want to login to the class, in D2L Brightspace, on August 19th and check your email for further instructions from your instructor.
Your virtual class begins on the start date of the class (not the day of the first scheduled meeting). For example, if the class begins on August 19th, you will want to login to the class, in D2L Brightspace, and check your email for further instructions from your instructor.
D2L Brightspace is the learning management system that PCC uses for students to access their class information. You may have accessed D2L Brightspace for your in-person classes. This system is used for all types of PCC classes.
Possibly! Your virtual class instructors will, at minimum, use D2L Brightspace to record your grades and to gain access to the syllabus. Many of them will also use other features such as to upload assignments, view and access content and course materials, and post announcements.
Your instructor may or may not schedule live virtual meetings on all days listed on the schedule of classes. Check your class schedule and class syllabus to verify when your virtual meetings take place.
Very few online classes may require a virtual meeting that your instructor schedules around your availability.
Your instructors can offer the live scheduled virtual meetings using several different platforms such as Zoom or Google Meet, or a tool used inside the class in D2L called Virtual Classroom. The syllabus and/or Getting Started module will include more information.
Both types of classes will have minimum technology requirements of daily Internet access, a computer, and a webcam or mobile phone.
Yes, your instructor will offer scheduled virtual office hours. Please check the syllabus for more information.
Attendance will be based on participating in the scheduled live virtual meetings AND completion of a weekly academic assignment. Attendance in online classes will be based on completion of a weekly academic assignment.
You will gain access to your virtual class in D2L Brightspace on the first day of the session (12 a.m.). This is also true for online classes.
